The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on 21 March, today.

This day was instituted by the United Nations(UN), in memory of victims of the Sharpeville massacre, a neighborhood of the South African province of Gauteng. The March 21, 1960, twenty thousand blacks protesting against the "Law of the Pass", which obliged them to use identification cards, specifying the places where they could move around the country. Although being a peaceful demonstration, the confrontation with the police made ​​69 dead and 186 wounded.

Since that day there have been profound changes in the international context, but there are still many ways of racial discrimination.
